Verse Vital: The Theatre of God's Glory

Updated: Mar 12

Essential Scripture

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)

Brief Reflection

The Dutch Reformed theologian, Herman Bavinck, described creation as the "theatre of God's glory." He added, "It is God's good creation." Bavinck was onto something because not only is creation good, it is the work of His creative genius. God, being the creator and source, is also the author. Everything that plays out from the moment of creation arises from His good pleasure—for the highest purpose of displaying His glory. This opening verse invites the audience not to scientific scrutiny or philosophical pondering, but to worshipful witnessing.

But the drama of the creation moment is just the beginning. The God of creation existed even before the "curtains opened". Abraham—who appears later in God's grand story—describes Him as the Everlasting God (Genesis 21:33). This means God has no beginning or end. He is eternal; infinite: unaffected by time, space, and matter.

As the story of the Creator unfolds through the pages of the Bible, the reading audience is introduced to the ultimate plot twist: God entering into creation itself—the incarnation of Jesus Christ. We are introduced to the God who not only builds the stage, but motivated by love, takes upon Himself the costume of human flesh and steps into the theatre (Philippians 2:7).

It is hard to understand it all. But perhaps—like the audience of a Broadway show is not meant to understand all the complex backstage systems of pulleys and levers—we're not meant to understand the sublime mystery of it all. Maybe the joy is not found in understanding what materials were used to construct the stage. Instead, as the drama unfolds, the audience absorbs the sheer beauty of it all. And if it is really good, a standing ovation would be the best way to express praise and adulation.

"In the beginning, God..." is the basis and foundation of truth itself—what C.H. Spurgeon called "the foundation stone of the universe."

Guided Prayer

Everlasting God, I bow in humble adoration at the sheer splendour of your creative power. My limited mind cannot fathom eternity but I'm grateful that you are mindful of me. Thank you for entering this world by taking the form of a servant. Help me bring glory to you through worship and love. Amen.
