Essential Scripture
And God said, “Let there be light”, and there was light. (Genesis 1:3)
Brief Reflection
Have you ever casually glanced over something only to go back later and ask "How did I miss that?" I have. Many years ago, flicking through an art book, I casually caught a glimpse of George Stubbs' iconic painting of a horse titled Whistlejacket. In a rush to get to the "real" paintings, I pretty much ignored it. Many years later, now in my thirties, I rediscovered the painting. But this time, I stopped, and really took it in. I'd now go as far as saying, it's probably the greatest depiction of a horse ever painted. The pure-bred, Arabian stallion looks almost real: its flesh—velvety-smooth, like chocolate.
The first part of Genesis 1:3 is easy to overlook. If glanced over casually—without slow and deliberate reading—the phrase “And God said…” will just seem like ordinary words. The depth and impact can easily be missed. Yet, contained within these three words is the Bible's first insight into the nature of the greatest Being: the God who speaks.
In this verse, God's speech commands there to be light. The divine command initiates the six days of creation with radiance that instantly dispels all darkness. And just like that, light appears immediately with zero hesitation. Its inanimate and immaterial properties birthed by divine declaration—dependent entirely on God. Matthew Henry writes, "He willed and appointed it, and it was done immediately."
God’s speech calls for the listener’s full attention—not passively like listening to a podcast while doing housework. Instead, complete attention is required, for it is the Most High God who is speaking. Nothing compares to the attention required when the God of the Universe speaks.
Today, God is still speaking. The Bible says "...in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son..." (Hebrews 1:2). Have you recently communicated with this speaking God? He stands ready, always willing to declare His goodwill. Are you listening? Are you paying attention? Are you ready to respond without hesitation when He speaks?
Guided Prayer
Dear God, there is none like You in heaven above or on earth beneath. Heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You. Speak, and cause Your servant to listen. Amen.
