Essential Scripture
For the Lord your God is a merciful God. He will not leave you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers that he swore to them. (Deuteronomy 4:31).
Brief Reflection
Do you frequently forget things? I do. I often need continuous reminders. Fortunately, I have caring individuals (my wife and kids) and smart technology to nudge me. And when I do forget crucial things, problems arise further down the line. When I'm on top of things and remember all the important tasks ahead, I feel confident and prepared to tackle whatever lies ahead of me.
In this verse, we're told a number of important truths about God. Two in particular are worth meditating on: His mercy, and the fact that God does not forget. Let's dive in.
Deuteronomy—the fifth book of the Bible authored by Moses—was written for the purpose of repeating the laws given to God's people at Sinai. The first generation to whom the law was given had mostly died and there was a danger that the next generation would forget the law. So, to help remind them, Moses restates the law and refreshes their memories about the mighty deeds of the Lord and how He had rescued their ancestors from under the burden of Egyptian slavery. God desired that this new generation would not forget past events before embarking on a new future in the Promised Land.
The verse reveals something important about the person and promises of God. Regarding the person of God, Moses declares "the Lord your God is a merciful God." Regarding the promises of God, "He will not leave you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers...". He will not leave His people, He will not destroy His people, and He will not forget His people. Why? Because "the Lord your God is a merciful God."
Isn't it comforting to know that the Lord is merciful and remembers His people?
Thousands of years after Moses, reflecting on God's rich mercy, Paul the apostle assures yet a new generation of people:
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. (Ephesians 2:4-5)
As you go into the week, be assured and reminded of God's rich mercy demonstrated through the cross of Christ.
Guided Prayer
Gracious God, I adore and praise you for the riches of your mercy. Thank you for saving me—an undeserving sinner. How deeply assuring it is to rest in this truth: that though I am often faithless and forgetful, you are eternally faithful, keeping all your promises. Amen.
