Verse Vital: The Good Shepherd Who Gives Abundant Life

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. (John 10:10)

Brief Reflection

If you’ve ever had your home broken into, you’ll know that feeling of dread when inspecting the damage. Many years ago, when our home was burgled, it wasn’t the loss of material possessions that bothered us. Instead, it was the uninvited invasion into our space, the place we call home, that troubled us the most. The thought of an unidentified person going through our belongings brought out the worst fears in our imaginations. Who was in our home? What did they look like? Why our home? Would they return? The thief not only broke into our home, they damaged our property, and robbed us not only of our possessions, but of our peace that particular night. The thief had come with one intended purpose: to take and enjoy the benefits of that which did not belong to him.

In this passage, Jesus is warning about the corrupt, false, and self-serving religious leaders. Instead of caring for God’s people, the sheep, the so-called shepherds behave more like thieves and robbers.

However, Jesus, the good shepherd, comes with an entirely different purpose: not to take, but to give. His promise of abundant life is not only for the future, but begins in the present. The Christian life is not one of dull, despondent, and unresponsive faith, but is instead characterised by a life of holiness, growth, fruitfulness, and faith overflowing with joy.

For this very reason, Jesus came into the world: that those who deserve judgement may instead taste grace; those who deserve hell may instead be sons and daughters of heaven; and those who deserve death may instead enjoy abundant life secured through Jesus’ own death on the cross.

Guided Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for offering abundant life to an unworthy sinner like me. Forgive me for anything that has crept into my life that doesn't reflect all that You have so generously granted to me. Help me walk not in unresponsive faith but in overflowing life that brings glory to You and good to others. Amen.
