Essential Scripture
Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness. (Acts 14:17)
Brief Reflection
Not too long ago, I enjoyed a hearty, healthy breakfast that left me feeling very happy. And it wasn't just the amazing variety of foods that left me feeling satisfied—it was the sheer fact that I enjoyed it in peace, tranquility and safety. But what made this breakfast particularly memorable was the spiritual reminder that morning. Having consumed my breakfast, taken my daily medicine, drank my cup of coffee, it suddenly hit me how blessed I was in that given moment. As my thoughts turned to the kindness and generosity of God, I was filled with a deep sense of gratitude. I was also challenged about being ungrateful, wasteful, and taking everyday blessings for granted.
Later that day, I continued reading from a book that I had recently started. The passage on that given day reinforced the breakfast lessons learnt earlier that morning. In the book—J.I. Packer's Knowing God—the author references Acts 14:17 to unpack the Biblical truth that the physical world itself testifies to God's existence and nature. In other words, God's existence is undeniable. The maker can be discovered by simply looking around.
The bountiful provision of various foods is God demonstrating His grace toward all humans. In the same way that God "makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust" (Matthew 5:45), so too does God graciously satisfy all hearts with food and gladness—what theologians call common grace.
I couldn't help but worship God through the day. My heart indeed was satisfied—praise be to God from whom all blessings flow. However, it's important to remember that although food satisfies the physical appetite, only God alone can satisfy the spiritual longings of the soul. In John 6:35, Jesus reminds us "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst."
Is your heart satisfied in God today?
Guided Prayer
Dear Lord, You are a generous and gracious God. The highest praise and adoration belongs to you and you alone. Thank you for the generous provisions my family and I enjoy each day. I pray for those around the world who are in need of such things. Forgive me for lacking gratitude and being ungrateful. I pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
