Verse Vital: From Sandwiches to God's Majestic Name

Essential Scripture

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! (Psalm 8:9).

Brief Reflection

A good friend of mine makes impressively delicious sandwiches. I'm not prone to exaggerating, but they're up there when it comes to raising the sandwich bar. He effortlessly layers the colourful ingredients, complete with soft, delicious bread to wrap them all in—like bookends, but more edible.

I once suggested that he should consider starting a business, and that if he did, I'd be a regular paying customer. He wasn't convinced. I'll continue trying to persuade him—watch this space.

The eighth psalm reminds me of a delicious sandwich. But it's a very different kind of food—one not prepared in the kitchen by human hands, but instead inspired by the Spirit of the living God. The spiritual food offered in this psalm directs the deepest longings of the human soul towards God. It opens and closes with the same affirmation on both ends: the excellency of God's name. Verses one and nine both read, “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

The poetical repetition—in addition to the layered reminders of God's sovereignty over the visible and invisible worlds—magnifies the Lord by pointing my gaze towards the majestic Lord. And so, when I observe the mystery and beauty of the night sky, I'm stirred to proclaim, “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

In John's Gospel, this same majestic God takes on human flesh, and enters into the very visible world He created. The Lord Jesus Christ—truly God and truly man—lived a perfect, sinless life, suffered, was crucified, and rose again on the third day. The risen Jesus offers Himself as the eternal bread (John 6:35)—that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
