Verse Vital: Don't Forget to Say Thank You

Essential Scripture

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures for ever! (Psalm 107:1)

Brief Reflection

In the early years of raising children, my wife and I spent a lot of time and energy teaching our children to say thank you each time they received a gift, compliment, or kind gesture. We also gave ongoing reminders when, in the sheer excitement of receiving something nice, they would often forget to say thank you. I think most parents can relate to this.

But while raising polite kids is important, the real task of parenting is to help them fix their eyes on Jesus — the fountain and source of all things good, the chief end of our gratitude. But gratitude does not come naturally to humans. In a world full of selfishness and thanklessness, it is an attitude that desperately needs to be modelled, learnt, and practised.

Psalm 107:1 goes one step further than just learning. In fact, the words “Oh give thanks” are a command to offer worship to the One who has rescued His people from dangers, famine, slavery, and oppression. But why a command? Well, for the same reason we tell our kids, “Don’t forget to say thank you.” Our fallen nature leans toward the gift and not the Giver. But a gratitude rooted in the virtues and excellencies of the Most High God is a gratitude that not only satisfies our desire to worship, but directs the very purpose of our lives.

And it gets even better. In the Lord Jesus Christ, God has faithfully rescued us from the power and penalty of that sinful fallen nature. On the cross, Jesus took the place of sinners and gave His life as a sacrifice. And all who place their faith and trust in Him can joyfully sing aloud, “Oh give thanks, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!”

Psalm 107:1 directs us back to the One who gives us every good reason to be a thankful people.

What have you given thanks for today or recently? What do you most complain about?

How would your friends describe you?

Guided Prayer

Lord Jesus, because of who You are, and what You have done for me on the cross, please order my steps, mould my heart, and fashion my words to live a life of gratitude. I’m sorry for the times when grumbling and complaining has characterised me more than gratitude and thankfulness. I need Your help to change. Amen.
