Essential Scripture
But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. (Psalm 3:3)
Brief Reflection
The 2024 song "Rock Bottom" by Citizen Soldier tells the story of a person experiencing deep emotional despair. The lyrics go, "Been praying God might save me 'cause nobody cares," followed by "And nobody's there when I call." The chorus concludes with a haunting question: "When will I hit rock bottom?"
The Bible is filled with stories of people who hit rock bottom. It never presents a rose-tinted picture of human struggles. Instead, it paints a truthful and vivid picture of mankind's deepest flaws and struggles. In fact, the Bible's greatest heroes are shown as ordinary people often carrying deep emotional pain and plenty of flaws—often caused by their own folly and sinful actions; at other times completely outside of their control.
Thankfully, the Bible brings a word of hope. Especially to those who feel like they've hit rock bottom or are speeding towards it.
King David wrote Psalm chapter three during a low point in his life. His son Absalom is hunting him down in order to overthrow his kingdom and take his throne. David escapes and goes into hiding, fearing for his life. During this period of his life, David reflects on his situation. His own son wants him dead and dethroned—could it get any worst?
But notice the Psalm is not characterised by despair. Instead, it reflects the words of calm assurance. A peace which surpasses understanding. These are the words of a man who looks beyond his situation and fixes his gaze heavenward—humbly yet confidently declaring in praise: "But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. (Psalm 3:3). Even in David's rock-bottom moment, David turns to God and offers praise. But where does this praise come from? It comes from a place of deep trust and relationship.
Would you do the same? If not, today is the day to look to the Lord. He can take your pain and turn it into praise. In our struggle against sin and every weight, the Bible invites the child of God to look to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2)—the one who is able to sympathise with our weaknesses. Look to Jesus; call upon Him today.
Guided Prayer
Lord Jesus, cause me to gaze upon you during life's darkest moments. Grant me the calm assurance needed to turn deep despair into powerful praise. Help me build my life around knowing, trusting, and loving You. Amen.
