Essential Scripture
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2)
Brief Reflection
Imagine waking up one morning to discover you've been transformed into a giant bug — like a large cockroach. Believe it or not, this is the plot of The Metamorphosis — Franz Kafka’s fictional novella first published in 1915. Among other themes, the short story explores how people view and treat others when they change in unexpected ways. In this case, the character is so radically transformed that his family, friends, and colleagues cannot help but notice the change — and now treat him differently too.
While we are not transformed outwardly like the character in Kafka’s story, the Bible speaks of something far more radical — an inner transformation initiated by the mercy of God. Often described as the new birth, it is the Holy Spirit’s regenerating work which radically transforms a sinner into a saint. A sinner who was once lost, but now is found. Once dead, now alive. Once a child of disobedience, now a beloved child of God. Once condemned, now justified. Once under wrath, now under grace. Once a slave to sin, now walking in the light. Once an enemy of God, now reconciled. All made possible for one reason alone: the perfect righteousness of Jesus and His atoning sacrifice made on behalf of undeserving sinners at the cross.
And precisely because of this merciful act of God — for which He alone is deserving of all glory, honour, and praise — the believer’s right response is one of worship-filled gratitude. This gratitude naturally leads to ongoing transformation, expressed as non-conformity to the spirit of the age and the renewing of the mind. This is the very heart of spiritual worship — offering every part of our lives, holy and acceptable to God. Not as an attempt to earn grace, but as a response to the grace shown to us through the love of Jesus Christ.
How would your dearest and nearest describe you: as someone conforming to the spirit of the age, or as someone being transformed by the renewal of your mind?
Guided Prayer
Heavenly Father, I’m sorry for the times when my life has resembled more conformity with the world and less the life of a transformed child of God. Please forgive me. Grant me the grace and power to walk in true transformation that reflects Your mercy and glory. Amen.
