Verse Vital: Called According To His Purpose

Essential Scripture

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28).

Brief Reflection

The first question of the Westminster Shorter Catechism asks, "What is the chief end of man?" "Chief end—what's that all about?" asked my kids. While I appreciate the terminology of the question, my kids needed a little help. Chief end here simply means main goal. So they naturally preferred and memorised my slightly reworded version: "What is the main reason a person exists?" To which we all answer in one voice: "The main reason a person exists is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever." As a family, we often refer to it when trying to navigate life's many complicated scenarios. It's a bit like carrying a mini purpose statement in our heads and hearts, or an invisible scaffold to stand on in order to reach outwards and upwards.

Romans 8:28 tells us something important about God's purpose for us. The entire chapter and verse set the tone to reveal God's purpose for His people. It was written to remind "those who love God" that He is actively working towards achieving His great purpose in our lives. The highs and lows, joys and struggles are all included as part of what God is doing. Sometimes, what God is doing—as well as allowing in our lives—won't always make sense or be immediately clear to us. But "those who love God" will trust Him because they know what He is like. They know that His purpose flows from His loving goodness.

Another comfort I take is that while I need externally sourced purpose to direct me, the same cannot be said about God. He, being the purpose giver, is in need of nothing. He does not need direction to steer Him towards an end goal because He is the goal. God's unchanging nature means I can lean on Him as a child leans on a father or mother—in complete submission and trust. And I can do this confidently because the writer of Hebrews tells us, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."

Are you leaning on the unchanging God as you press into God's purpose for your life?

Guided Prayer

Heavenly Father, please guide and teach me to see clearly Your purpose in my life. I confess I don't always get it right and often lean on my own strength to figure things out. Direct me to prayer, and by the power of Your Holy Spirit, to search and study the Scriptures to grow towards this. I ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
