Essential Scripture
And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. (Luke 1:19)
Brief Reflection
I remember watching the TV in September 2022, completely captivated by "The Queue"—the historic, ten-mile line along the River Thames where a quarter of a million people waited for up to thirty hours in the freezing cold just for a ten-second glance at Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin. It struck me how deeply we desire proximity to sovereignty. In ancient times, being near a monarch was an incredibly rare privilege; only the most trusted advisors were granted access to look upon the king's face.
In Luke chapter one, the angel Gabriel appears to Zechariah the priest to announce good news. Zechariah’s prayer had been heard, and his wife Elizabeth would soon bear a son named John. It was good news because both were advanced in years, and Elizabeth had been barren her whole life. However, Zechariah’s immediate response is one of unbelief. His doubting of God’s message was deeply unfitting for a priest whose very job included representing God to the people. Because of this lack of faith, Zechariah is punished with temporary muteness.
However, it’s the angel's response to this unbelief that really catches my attention. He declares, “I stand in the presence of God…” Both Gabriel's ability to stand and his authority to stand does not come from his own strength, but from the Lord Himself. From this unique position, Gabriel is granted the privilege of direct proximity, powerful authority, and divine service. Gabriel does Zechariah a service by providing a timely reminder of the authority and reliability of both the message and messenger. This was no small matter. To stand in the presence of the God who "dwells in unapproachable light" (1 Timothy 6:16) is utterly beyond our limited understanding.
For the Christian believer today, the Bible warns against an unbelieving heart (Hebrews 3:12). Furthermore, we do not need to wait for the angel of the Lord to speak with us. God has something better: He has chosen to speak directly with His people, through His own Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Are you listening to the Son? Have you read Hebrews chapter one lately?
Guided Prayer
Dear Lord, There is none who can stand in your presence without your enabling power. Thank you for your granting me faith and access into your presence because of the Lord Jesus Christ. Forgive me for my unbelief, and help me to listen—not to doubts, but to the voice of your Son, spoken through Scripture. In Jesus' name, Amen.
