Essential Scripture
I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustained me. (Psalm 3:5)
Brief Reflection
I've recently been enjoying my sleep in a way that I've never really given much thought to before. Up to now, I've treated sleep as a bit of an inconvenience—something that got in the way of more "important" things. It's a bit like me telling the kids it's bedtime right in the middle of their favourite activity; it's usually met with a heavy sigh instead of a jubilant celebration. I can only put it down to a sense of FOMO (fear of missing out). Whatever it is, I’m thankful to God for sleep. I shudder to think what humans would do get up to if they never grew tired.
Lately, I've been looking at this daily reset through a different lens. Psalm 3:5 has an almost formulaic rhythm to it: "I lay down and slept; I woke again..." Its pattern is common to man and beast alike. Sleep is the ultimate leveller; it's what all flesh needs and cannot avoid. But while most people take this cycle for granted, the writer of this Psalm does not. Written during a turbulent time of David's life, the formulaic conclusion ends with, "...for the LORD sustained me."
He acknowledges God's sustaining power in the simple yet profound pattern of sleeping and arising. Every night we close our eyes, we are practising an act of dependency on our Creator—and every morning we wake up, it's proof that the Lord's sustaining power has kept us for another day.
Have you thanked the Lord recently for sustaining you?
