Essential Scripture
And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. (Luke 1:50)
Brief Reflection
Many people reject the idea of fearing God. They regard it as old-fashioned, outdated, and too negative. Instead, there is a general preference for all things positive—the light-hearted stuff that does not unsettle. But while worldly thinking reacts against it, the Bible strongly and positively connects it to godly living. When read carefully and closely, the people written about in the Bible who were most used by the Lord appear to develop a characteristic godly fear.
For example, consider King Solomon—remembered as Israel's wisest and wealthiest king—who, when reflecting on life's purpose, concludes: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge" (Proverbs 1:7). To use another example, consider the description given to the early church in Acts 9:31: "And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied." Both examples are positive; both examples are put forward as a way to live.
Mary's impromptu song of praise (often called the Magnificat) in Luke chapter 1 is a celebration song. It's a burst of rapturous song magnifying the Lord and rejoicing in God her Saviour. Flowing from her instinctive knowledge and relationship with God, Mary uses song to declare what is true about her Saviour: that His mercy indeed extends to those who fear Him (Luke 1:50).
Do you fear God? Do you walk in the fear of the Lord?
Guided Prayer
Heavenly Father, be merciful to me, a sinner. Please cultivate within the deepest parts of my being a holy reverence and fear for You, the living God. I reject worldly thinking and accept Your ways as better. I ask this in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.
