Verse Vital: For the Joy That Was Set Before Him

Essential Scripture

…looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2)

Brief Reflection

I enjoy watching documentaries occasionally—especially where I can learn something new or feel like I’m adding a new layer of learning. My go-to documentaries typically involve anything to do with a historical event (e.g., the World Wars) or something involving animals in the wild (think David Attenborough). I have an inclination that some of this may have rubbed off on me from my dad, as he was interested in both. I recall watching all kinds of documentaries with him.

Last week, I watched a documentary about the Shroud of Turin. The shroud is believed by many to be the very cloth which wrapped Jesus’ lifeless body when he was laid in the tomb (John 20:6–7). The belief is that at the moment of the resurrection, a visible negative-like imprint was left as a photographic image on the cloth itself. There is good reason to believe it could be authentic.

Although the documentary was good, it was the conclusion at which the filmmaker arrived that stirred me towards spiritual reflection and prayer. As he walked the streets of Jerusalem—tracing the possible steps Jesus may have taken as he carried the cross towards Golgotha—the filmmaker's deep emotion came through. Like Jesus, he took a cross upon his shoulders and walked the same route. As he did this, he tried to imagine the humiliation of Jesus—bruised, bleeding, half-naked, paraded as a criminal through the narrow streets. All eyes would have been on him as he struggled through with the heavy cross upon his shoulders.

This moved me profoundly. I can't vouch for the shroud of Turin as being real, but the events of the gospel, I sure can. These events really happened. Jesus really came into this world, took on the form of a human, and bore my sin and shame. And why did he endure this? For the joy that was set before him.

Are you trusting in Jesus?

Guided Prayer

Lord Jesus, for the joy that was set before you, you took my sin and shame. You endured the cross, despising its shame in order to redeem fallen man and defeat death itself. I praise and love you. Amen.

  • What is the big idea in Hebrews 12?

  • What’s the difference between needing physical proof (like looking for historical evidence) and having faith in what God has done for us?

  • What specifically was the joy set before Jesus?

  • Why did the Romans make Jesus carry a cross through the streets?
