Verse Vital: Midterms, Greek, and the Anchor of the Gospel

Essential Scripture

Do not be anxious about anything... (Philippians 4:6)

Brief Reflection

Last week, I concluded my midterm exams. Having been out of formal education for many years, I had forgotten how stressful they can be. Of the three exams I had, it was New Testament Greek that gave me the heebie-jeebies. I kept asking myself if I would be able to apply everything that I had learned up to this point, or if I would bomb at the first hurdle.

Thankfully, being a little older comes with certain advantages and benefits—it's not all downhill! Among those benefits of being a "mature" student are the ability to manage time better, the capacity to retain important information, and, most importantly in my opinion, a deeper abiding trust in the Lord. Out of all the exam strategies and preparation, it was abiding and trusting in the Lord that fueled my real sense of peace during the exam season.

It's what made all the difference!

Sitting down with the Greek paper, instead of panic setting in, I remembered His instruction to rest. As I meditated on Philippians 4:6, I was assured by God's Word not to be anxious about anything. I sensed the Lord speaking: "Do your best, son. Give it all you’ve got, prepare well, use your time economically and wisely. You’ll be okay. Rest in Me. Trust in Me."

During this precious time of communion with God, I immediately sensed His peace guarding both my heart and mind. I was able to declare that whatever the outcome and results of my exams, certain facts would remain true. Facts fixed on the character of God and all that is true about Jesus. The hope that I have in Him means I have no reason to be anxious about anything. This doesn't mean I neglect meaningful preparation. It simply meant my identity is not rooted in performance or results. Instead, it's rooted and built on the solid rock that is Jesus.

What a pressure release! Facing the anxiety of midterms and Greek with the solid anchor of the gospel made all the difference. While in the past I may have known about these truths, something felt different this time. I sensed the reality of these truths.

The fixed hope in Jesus is forever true. To whom do you turn during seasons of anxiety?

Guided Prayer

Heavenly Father, my identity is not rooted in academic success. It is rooted in the enormous fact that You are God—my Saviour, my Redeemer, and the Lord of my life. Thank You for reminding me that I can wholly trust in Jesus' name, and that because of Him, I do not need to be anxious. Thank You also for granting wisdom through the counsel of others and through maturity. Amen.
