Verse Vital: A Misplaced Bike Lock and God's Joy

Essential Scripture

If ever you take your neighbour’s cloak in pledge, you shall return it to him before the sun goes down… (Exodus 22:26)

Brief Reflection

When my family and I first arrived in the USA early this August, we didn’t have anything apart from the contents of our suitcases. Our apartment was empty and we had to begin from scratch. This was both exciting and quite daunting. As a husband and father, I wanted to ensure that I could not only protect and pastor my family but also provide for their needs. As always, God, in His overflowing goodness, has made all things possible by providing just what was needed.

Amongst these provisions was a bicycle. A generous family kindly loaned me a bike so I could commute back and forth between home and seminary. Recently, while out cycling with some friends, we got caught in a sudden thunderstorm. For safety, we rushed back to the car, hurriedly mounted the bikes onto the rack, and drove back to our friends' home. In the midst of the haste, the borrowed bike lock was misplaced.

In connection with misplacing the bike lock, I’ve recently been reading through the book of Exodus as part of my daily Bible reading. When I reached chapter 22, I was reminded of the importance God places on personal property—especially items borrowed from someone else. God gave His people specific civil laws and instructions regarding social justice, poverty, debt, and personal responsibility. The overarching message is clear: God’s people are called to be careful and considerate with another person’s possessions, treating them as fellow image-bearers.

Yet as I reflected on this, I was reminded that our care for small things isn't a way to earn God's favour, but a response to what Christ has already done for us. In the Gospel, Jesus took ultimate responsibility for what wasn't His—bearing our sin, debt, and fallenness on the cross so that we might be fully forgiven and restored.

In light of this, I sensed I needed to not only inform my friend that I had misplaced his bike lock, but also purchase a replacement. By God’s grace, I did both. And in doing so, I experienced God’s presence and joy.

Guided Prayer

Heavenly Father, You care deeply about the great work of man’s salvation through Your Son, Jesus Christ, but You are equally interested in the daily fruit of that salvation in our lives. Thank You for taking on our ultimate debt at the cross so that we may live in freedom and joy. I praise You for giving us the treasure of Your Word, which reminds us of the small, daily details of living out our faith before You and others. Amen.
